There Are Many Treatments Available To Shrink The Prostate

For men suffering from a prostatic disorder, doctors may recommend to shrink the prostate as a way to cure this disorder.

There are several disorders which may cause it necessary to shrink the prostate. These include prostate infection, prostate cancer and prostate enlargement.

Men in their 30s, 40s, and 50s are more prone to getting a prostate infection. Prostate cancer may occur less frequently in men who are under 50, but becomes more common as a man ages.

The prostate enlarges with benign (non-cancerous) tissue, called benign prostatic hypertrophy.

When to Shrink the Prostate - Symptoms

It is necessary to shrink the prostate once it has become enlarged. Men with an enlarged prostate will have various symptoms such as frequent urination; a burning sensation with urination; a feeling of fullness behind the scrotum and in the front of the rectum area; and a discharge from the penis.

These symptoms are the result of an infection that has caused the prostate gland to swell.

Another reason that doctors might shrink the prostate is related to how the urine flows from the penis. If a man has an enlarged prostate, his urine will be a thin stream which starts and stops rather than a full stream.

The diagnosis to shrink the prostate is made by the man having a rectal examination; urinalysis to check for signs of an infection or inflammation; and, a prostate specific antigen blood test, commonly known as a PSA.

A PSA test can predict the prostate size and prostate cancer because the PSA number is higher as the size increases. A high PSA reading always results in greater urinary problems and the possibility that surgery is needed.

Shrink the Prostate - Treatments

There are various treatments used to shrink the prostate that does not include surgery. If none of these work, surgery might be necessary.

Patients usually decide on a form of treatment based on the level of discomfort that is experienced from the symptoms. The advantages and disadvantages of each should be considered.

Antibiotics can be taken for a long period of time, but no real benefit is realized. This is because there might not be an infection, but rather muscle spasms which can be treated with muscle relaxants and warm baths.

There are also a few home remedies which can shrink the prostate.

Men who experience frequent urination during the night should limit their fluid intake after 7:00 p.m. and cut down on the amount of liquids which contain caffeine. Having frequent intercourse will remove any prostatic fluid that is present through ejaculation.

Other ways is to avoid over-the-counter decongestants and cold remedies.
